Videotaping a submission to speak at TED

Jane Goodall at TED2003

Dear Early Light –

I am planning to have my partner videotaped as part of his submission to speak at the TED convention next year. Since we don't live in Los Angeles, we won't be able to hire you. But because I like the way you capture the essence of people's work, we'd like to ask your advice.

My partner will make his presentation (his model is called The Language of Work) in front of an audience and will speak from his PowerPoint slides.  Any ideas on what we should include in this tape and how long it should be?

KS Whiteside, partner, Performance International

Hello KS –

Good for you, thinking about these questions BEFORE you shoot! Let’s start by trying to get inside the mind of your audience. Ask yourself: if you were a TED video submissions reviewer, what would you look for in a video? Remember, you’ve got hundreds – no, more like thousands of videos to look at.

Here’s what I’d be looking for. First, is the presenter able to hold an audience’s attention?

The best way to show this in your video is to shoot your partner when he’s presenting what he feels most passionate about in his work. You’ll recognize it. He gets excited. Animated. He wants you to understand what he’s saying and to care about it as deeply as he does. These are the moments when an audience will effortlessly connect with him.

Second does the presenter have something new to say that a TED audience will want to hear?

This takes a little research. Review who has presented at TED in your field in the past and watch their presentations (available on the TED website). You’ll learn what’s already in the TED archives and considered part of history. In other words: do not revisit. You’ll also get a flavor for what kinds of topics win TED audiences’ attention. With this knowledge, discuss with your partner how he can focus his model to tap into this channel of interest. He is undoubtedly an expert in his field, but his submission will stand out if he crafts his presentation to the tastes and interests of this particular audience.

In considering length, it’s always best to be brief. In 5 minutes TED reviewers will know all that they need to know about you.

To our Friends: Post your questions, comments, ideas or thoughts on what makes a video presentation work well - or not so well. We'd like to hear your story
